Setback for French GP hopes

NEWS STORY

Hopes of France returning to the F1 calendar have taken a further knock following news that plans for a purpose built track at Flins-Les-Mureaux have been abandoned.

With Magny Cours dumped and Euro Disney scrapped before it had hardly got off the ground, all hope appeared to rest on the proposed track at Flins-Les-Mureaux,43 km from the French capital.

However, Alain Schmidt, president of the Conseil General of the French department Yvelines, has revealed that this project has also been aborted, mainly for political reasons.

"I really feel that we were not as supported as I had hoped," he is quoted as saying is sections of the French media. "Therefore, having consulted all the stakeholders, I have decided, in agreement with the conseil, to abandon construction of a Formula One circuit."

While Bernie Ecclestone has made no secret of his desire to see F1 on the streets of the French capital, the only hope for the future of the French Grand Prix is a return to Magny Cours or another proposed purpose built track in the Sarcelles/Val d'Oise region, just 17.5 km from Paris.
