Threat to 2010 German GP

NEWS STORY

With Hockenheim unable to host next year's German GP following the local district council's decision to withdraw its funding, officials at the Nurburgring have said that financially they will not be in a position to host the event.

Currently the two circuits host the race in alternate years, however, having incurred a £5.1m loss on the 2008 event, the city of Hockenheim has chosen to withdraw its funding. Unable to raise the necessary finances in the private sector, officials at Hockenheim have now given up on hosting the event in 2010 and beyond.

Asked to step into the breach and save next year's event however, officials at the Nurburgring have made it clear that they are financially not in a position to do so.

"Definitely we are not available for next year," said the Nurburgring's managing director Walter Kafitz, according to the Guardian, "we are planning only for 2011.

"Bernie could manage it," he added, referring to his request that the F1 supremo lower his fee for hosting the race, "but I cannot imagine that he is willing to accept my wish."

At the height of the Schumacher-era, Germany was hosting two Grands Prix, however, now, even with five home drivers on the grid, the grandstands are far from full.

"I can't imagine having no F1 in Germany," said Kafitz. "I am very optimistic that we will get Germany a solution for every year."
