We have a winner!

NEWS STORY
30/04/2008

It's sad to report that cheating in F1 is not restricted solely to the inhabitants of 'Planet Paddock'.

Our recent competition saw a record number of readers flagrantly breaking the rules in their attempt to win the 1:1 scale Red Bull steering wheel - kindly provided by Amalgam - while others, although not breaking the rules in the strictest sense, certainly went against the spirit of things, such was their desire to be "the winner".

If nothing else, we will ensure that when we next run a competition a few more loopholes will have been closed.

Anyway, congratulations to Rick Wickel, who is one of those true rarities - or so the powers that be would have us believe - an F1 fan in the United States… Arlington, Texas, to be precise.

On hearing that he had won the prize, a delighted Rick told Pitpass: "A good friend of mine really got me into F1 by inviting me to the US GP in 2002. I'd been around F1 before when it was in Dallas and I remember when Andretti gave it a run. However, until 2002, I wasn't hooked. We went religiously every year after 2002, camped out across from the pagoda, and flew a dirigible, "Mother Earth" above our campsite, for the last two US GPs. That September in 2002, I did my research and claimed Kimi Raikkonen as my boy. I followed him through thick and thin, the disappointments and the achievements.

"I've got a side room littered with Formula One Prints. I've got three Kimi diecasts and two autographed Kimi Raikkonen signed prints from his fan club. The Red Bull Steering Wheel will be a fantastic addition.

"I am very appreciative. Hopefully next year we'll get the GP back in the USA."

Well Rick, we're delighted that the steering wheel will go to a good, fully deserving, home, and we're sure that you are not alone in wanting F1 back in the USA.

As a matter of interest, even with the tie-break - which saw Kimi Raikkonen claim the triple, having also taken pole position - there were 128 'winners'. Therefore, we had to resort to the old standby of picking an outright winner at random (from a hat).

Congratulations to Rick, commiserations to those whose names weren't pulled from the hat, better luck next time to those who got it wrong and 'hard cheese' to the cheats.
