Confusion over Arrows

NEWS STORY
29/08/2002

Despite Arrows' assurances that they would be competing in this weekend's Belgian GP and the announcement that the Heads of Agreement had been signed with an American investor there is still total confusion regarding the Leafield outfit.

First off, despite the widespread belief that Fernando Alonso would drive the second car the team has named Heinz-Harald Frentzen as their second driver. Frentzen's manager has categorically denied that the German will drive this weekend and added that the former Arrows driver won't even be in Belgium.

It's understood that Arrows named Frentzen simply to satisfy the official requirements that demand both drivers are named by Thursday's scrutineering deadline. The reason for 'swapping' the two drivers is because teams are only allowed to change their lead driver once in a season. Therefore Bernoldi had to be nominated as number one. The number two driver can be replaced twice however which means that a 'replacement' for Frentzen could be nominated any time between now and Saturday's qualifying session - providing the race stewards agree.

With regards the American investor the water becomes even muddier. It's rumoured that the mystery ban behind the buyout is Cal Smith, a billionaire, who in his 80s, who made his fortune in mining. Other than that, very little is known about the mysterious Mr Smith.

To add to the confusion Mr Smith is not part of the American consortium that former BAR boss Craig Pollock was heading. "Absolutely not," the Scot said today, according to Reuters. "It's nothing to do with me.

"My interest in Arrows is officially finished," he added. "That's it."
