Irvine unhappy with Ferrari tactics

NEWS STORY
29/08/2002

Eddie Irvine today took the opportunity to take a swipe at his former, and some would have you believe next, employers.

The Ulsterman, like many others, is unhappy at Ferrari's refusal to let their two drivers race each other. The man who spent four years with the Italian team - taking 4 wins and 156 points from 65 outings for the Scuderia - believes that Ferrari is cheating the fans, it's drivers and itself.

"Ferrari not letting the two guys race is just not right," said Irvine. "They should let them race, who cares who comes second in the championship?

"This is overkill, just like it was in Austria," said Irvine referring to the result-fixing incident within site of the finishing line that caused a worldwide outcry.

"It's a fact that Ferrari have produced the best car this year," he added. "But what they are doing is completely over the top. They are just taking the Mickey out of the sport."

The Ulsterman also took the opportunity to poke fun at reports that he is to re-join Ferrari in 2003, as a test driver.

"That's not going to happen," he laughed. "Mugello's hard work, the idea of driving around Mugello for two or three days and then you'd actually need a week of recovery after doing three days hard testing for Ferrari at Mugello.

"No, that's a joke that made a headline," he added.

Finally, Eddie took the opportunity to add to the conjecture regarding a seat at Jordan where sponsors Benson & Hedges are said to be keen to secure the services of a high profile British driver. "High profile and British?" laughed Irvine. "I wonder who that is. I don't know. I'm in no rush to do anything, I'm quite happy just plodding along and see what happens.
