Montoya finishes third on stock car debut

Former McLaren and WilliamsF1 F1 driver, Juan Pablo Montoya, finished third in the ARCA RE/MAX 250 at Talladega Superspeedway in Alabama on Friday.

The Colombian, who shocked the F1 pitlane when he announced his intention to leave the sport for NASCAR in 2007, and was subsequently dropped by McLaren, qualified on the front row, in his first ever stock car race, missing out on pole by just 0.009s.

Having led the race for a number of laps, Montoya was involved in an accident that saw him slip back down the field, however, he eventually fought back to finish third.

"I haven't have this much fun in a race for a long time," he told reporters after the race. "I'm not saying F1 is bad or anything, I think it's great racing as well.

"The cars are unbelievable," he continued, "I haven't had this much fun in a long time. I passed probably 40 cars today easily. It's outrageous."

The ARCA RE/MAX series, which is based in the Midwest, will allow Montoya to find his feet in stock cars, on his way to moving up to NASCAR's main series, the Nextel Cup, in 2007.
