Villeneuve rejects $50m CART deal

NEWS STORY
27/08/2002

It's reported that Jacques Villeneuve has turned down a $50m contract that would see him return to CART in 2003.

According to reports Jacques' manager Craig Pollock officially rejected the offer yesterday (Monday) stating that it was "insufficient".

The Journal de Montreal claims that the three-year deal would see Villeneuve compete in CART in 2003 then return to BAR for two further seasons of F1 in 2004 and 2005.

Gerald Forsythe, co-owner of the Player's-Forsythe CART team said: "Unfortunately, Pollock wanted even more money. It's a shame, because we know the project interested Jacques, who didn't dislike the idea of coming back to North America where he could have won races."

BAR has already announced that Jenson Button will drive for them next year, but even though Villeneuve has a contract with the Brackley based outfit he has yet to be confirmed.

Team boss David Richards has made it clear that he feels the money being paid to Villeneuve would be better spent on building and developing the new car.

Pollock meanwhile is involved in negotiations to purchase the Arrows team.
