Movements at McLaren-Mercedes

NEWS STORY
24/04/2004

As previously reported, Hans-Ulrich Maik, Managing Director at Mercedes-Ilmor, has been shown the door, though Mercedes Motorsport boss Norbert Haug was unwilling to shed any further light on the issue yesterday.

"There's not a lot to say," he replied when asked about Maik's departure. "There was an agreement between both parties and we split and we agreed not to discuss it any further."

Meanwhile Martin Whitmarsh moves on from his role as managing director of McLaren Racing, this role to be taken by former Operations Director Jonathan Neale, to take over the operational management of McLaren-Mercedes entire F1 programme

"Martin is chief executive officer responsible for both chassis and engine and all the organisation and the display of the Formula One team in practical terms," explained Haug, "We want to work as one entity and I think that is a very good step in the right direction."

Meanwhile, it's believed that there is still a question mark over the future of Adrian Newey, following the team's catastrophic start to the 2004 season and the MP4-18 fiasco. Chief designer Mike Coughlan and Executive director of engineering Neil Oatley, are also said to be under pressure to deliver.
