Talking Point: Korea... and matters arising

NEWS STORY
26/10/2010

Over the course of Sunday's drawn-out affair I realised that we hadn't had a Talking Point for some time. The occasional topic has cropped up but then on Sunday all manner of issues arose many of which I thought would be good for discussion.

First off, despite the negative publicity ahead of the event, the organisers did their very best and - against all odds - were able to put on a good show.

While we have grown used to the PR hyperbole of drivers and team bosses - "we're delighted to be here", "F1 needs (your country's name here)" and "this really is the most impressive facility since previous newcomer)". However, the track at Yeongam was a lot better than we expected and the drivers really seemed to enjoy it.

On the other hand, if you'll pardon the pun, have we been sold another Turkey, another half decent track that will ultimately drop off the calendar because nobody wants to go there?

As for the event itself, one can only hope that Mike Lawrence is in touch with Turk Thrust for this had the hands of the Formula One Script Unit all over it. Indeed, maybe it was even too much for Turk and the gang.

Fact is, Bernie wants it all ways. He wants the money that only Eastern governments can offer yet also wants to maintain the sport's European fan-base. Consequently, in order to have as many European fans glued to their TV sets as possible the races are held at ever less practical times locally. Not for the first time difficult weather caused the race start to be delayed, and, not for the first time, the lack of natural light proved to be a problem.

As for the race being started behind the Safety Car, I, personally, agree with Lewis Hamilton. I found myself totally frustrated by those endless laps behind Berndt Maylander. Of course, sitting at a PC watching events unfold on the monitor, TV screen and iTouch, it's all too easy to hanker for the old days when the boys got into their cars, whatever the weather, and got on with it.

In the race report I referred to Pedro Rodriguez in the Porsche 917 at Brands Hatch in 1970 in conditions that still make me shiver. It was this sort of spirit that really hooked me on motorsport, that set the drivers apart from us mere mortals. Then again, Pedro, like so many of his contemporaries, was to perish at the wheel of a racing car.

Then again, I remember saying something similar to Niki Lauda a couple of years back and he reminded me that F1's new family audience, including Granny, sitting around the TV on Sunday afternoon don't want to see anybody get hurt.

Yeongam gave us plenty to discuss; so what were you thinking about during that long delay before the start, during the procession behind the Safety Car and after the race - then again, how did viewers in the UK feel about the BBC switching channels during the race and (commentator) Jonathan Legard "reminding" them about the move - as though they'd previously been warned.

Let's hear what you think about these or any other issues arising from Sunday afternoon.
