The Rot Must Stop

FEATURE BY CHRIS BALFE
23/09/2009

I won't name him, but there is a regular on the Pitpass forum who has defended Max Mosley through thick and thin. Even at the height of last year's sex scandal.

However, last week, in referring to the constant leaking of documents relating to 'Crashgate', he wrote: "The whole leak thing stinks and has the hand of Max all over it. I do hope that next Monday this can all be put to bed and we can get on with the racing - and say goodbye and good riddance to the gone by his sell by date Max".

I am unsure whether 'Crashgate' can be "put to bed", for the World Motor Sport Council's decision, not to mention Mosley's defence of it only underlines why so many of us agree with the forum poster. Yes, it will be good riddance to Mosley come October, however, do we really believe that things will be any different under the man he is backing as his successor. I think not.

It can hardly have escaped your attention but in Britain one of the stories dominating the headlines this year has been the expenses scandal involving Members of Parliament. Virtually all of them were 'at it' and no matter their political persuasion when it came to getting their snouts into the trough it was anything goes.

Only on Monday, Liberal Democrat MEP Chris Davis spoke of the "dirty cheating b******s" that abuse expenses in the European Parliament, but he might as well have been talking about their Westminster cousins.

The sad thing is that despite the revelations, the headlines and even the sums involved, not one Westminster MP has been arrested, far less prosecuted or jailed for what many of us see as outright theft. Consequently, with a pack of "dirty cheating b******s" at the helm is it any wonder that the country is in such a steep moral decline?

It is the leaders who should be setting the example, however, when they themselves are shameless in their corruption the end result is inevitable.

In terms of Westminster, next year we will have the opportunity to vote out Gordon Brown but what is the alternative, after all we already know from the expenses scandal - despite the best efforts of the BBC - that all the major parties are as bad as one another.

However, while we will have our chance to choose who leads our country for the next five years, you and I will have no say in who gets to head the FIA. And, be under no illusion, when I refer to the corruption at Westminster and Brussels in terms of MPs and MEPs, I am making a distinct comparison with the rot which I believe has been growing at the heart of the FIA under Mosley.

While Mika Hakkinen says that Formula One will soon move on from 'Crashgate', one begs to wonder what the next sordid little saga to dominate the headlines will be. For, like a 252 bus, you know that after waiting over half-an-hour for one, eventually two or three will show up at the same time.

Before 'Crashgate' there was 'Liegate', with 2007's 'Spygate' closely followed by the News of the World's revelations regarding Mosley's sex life. But there have been others.
