Talking Point: The Emperor’s New Clothes?

NEWS STORY
04/08/2004

Finally, it's a done deal, Mark Webber is a WilliamsF1 driver, although by all accounts he will not have the Italian teammate his new bosses had hoped for.

A regular reader, who just happens to be a former F1 and Sportscar racer, recently e-mailed me the following: "Am I missing something or what? Why such enormous interest in Mark Webber? I know he does good things with the Jaguar which usually looks like a heap of s***, but then Christian Klien, who is no F1 driver does more or less the same thing."

Although we don't yet know the identity of Webber's 2005 teammate (does WilliamsF1?), it seems safe to say that the Australian will be team leader. Now according to e-mails received and peeking at various forums, opinion is sharply divided. Some believe that the Grove outfit will have a strong line-up next season while others believe it will be its weakest for years.

Yes this isn't specifically about Webber or WilliamsF1. What we'd be interested in hearing is your opinion on some of the current drivers in F1 and those allegedly on the brink of entering, or returning, in terms of whether they are overrated or underrated.

Looking through the current grid, how many of the drivers are potential race winners, let alone World Champions?

This isn't a place for claiming that 'X' is the best and has a god given right to be in F1 because he will win three more titles, it's about arguing the case for those drivers that are wasted in F1 and those that are simply wasted in the wrong team or car.

I think that quite a lot of the current drivers are potential race winners. Obvious choices are Jenson Button and Mark Webber. On a good day Takumo Sato also has it in him to win a race or two. Alonso and Trulli have already had their maiden victories and I believe that they both have the ability to win more but I don't see championship potential in either of them..

When it comes to future world champions I don't think that there are many drivers in the pack with the true capability. Kimi just needs the right car and then he would be my choice without any competition (apart from Michael, obviously). Both JPM and Ralf have the driving ability but they are too erratic. It could happen but in an all out fight against Kimi I don't think that either of them could cope with the pressure.

I have my doubts about Mark Webber. He is a good driver but is he a great driver? I think that a year with Williams will answer that question. If he does well then he could be a future champion. If her doesn't win a race or two next year I'll be surprised but is he aggressive enough to do more? I haven't seen any evidence of that yet.
