2002 Brazilian GP - Bob talks to Jean Todt

FEATURE BY BOB CONSTANDUROS
01/04/2002

Q: What did you think of the start?
Jean Todt: Once again, there was a much-discussed start, like all starts, which turned in our favour this time.

Q: Were you surprised by the behaviour of the Bridgestones this time, given the rivalry between the tyre companies.
JT: Yes, I was expecting a slightly greater loss of performance but particularly on the first set of tyres, Michael was able to create a gap that was crucial the outcome of the race.

Q: Did the new car do all that was required of it?
JT: I think that's the least you can say.

Q: Was it a result that you expected from this car?
JT: No, I think it was very difficult to win today, particularly given what we'd seen of our rivals' performance. Their package seemed more consistent than ours. And it didn't work out like that. In the end it worked in our favour.

Q: So it was thanks to a great Schumacher and a great team.
JT: Michael managed to drive an exceptional race, without ever bowing to the very strong pressure which he had throughout the race. In the first part of the race, he had to pull out a fairly large advantage and afterwards he was pushed very hard by his brother. It was hard to push hard and keep the car on the track.

Q: Michael said that we wouldn't see the real potential of this car until three or four races. It seems to be promising.
JT: I hope it's promising in our favour. I hope so. I know that we still have a lot of work to do and that our competition have also already done a lot. So it looks as though it will be a championship that will be fascinating for everyone who is passionate about Formula One, and extremely difficult for us but we've shown that we have a lot of will, a lot of ambition, determination and passion to continue to liven up Formula One races.

Q: When will Rubens get his F2002?
JT: At Imola

Q: Are you relieved now after all the discussion whether to bring the F2002 or not?
JT: I knew that we needed to reach a certain level of reliability before deciding to come here with the new car, so I was quite relieved when I saw what we were able to do in Barcelona, because if we hadn't been able to do what we did, then we would not have decided to bring the new car, and definitely we knew that the new car had the better potential.

But even today you saw that Rubens, even starting from eighth position, would have finished in third position, so it's a question of the overall package and today, our package was probably better than we could expect before the beginning of the race.

Q: Does it worry that you've now had technical problems twice?
JT: We've had two failures, one on the engine, we know why, and we have reacted and I wouldn't say that we won't have unreliability problems, but we have understood why. And today, I don't know yet what happened, but we need to understand.

Q: What's the programme now?
JT: Fiorano and Mugello this week, we start on Tuesday until Saturday.

Q: Are there a lot of new parts coming for Imola?
JT: New car, new tyres everything. We still need to develop, yes.

Q: How much of an effort was it to bring the new and old cars here, compared to a normal race weekend.
JT: We just had to bring some extra people to do the extra jobs but it went quite smoothly, the guys were able to finish work quite early in the evenings so it was not so difficult.

Q: Are you afraid that the battle between Michael and Juan Pablo gets out of hand?
JT: It has always been like that. I think Michael has been remarkable. He's not getting into any games. He's a fighter, he defended his position in a very nice, a very talented way. I think it has always been like that.

I think the FIA decisions, which we made, together with the F1 commission, are good, they are going in the right direction.

Q: How surprised were you to have this win today?
JT: I thought we were going to be competitive but I thought the others would be very competitive. I thought that they were favourites. But saying that, I knew we had an opportunity and that has been shown today.

But it's a world where people react with too much emotion. Yesterday we were a tenth from pole having been on pole twice and people were saying that a miracle had happened. I leave with them their emotion. What is important is that we have our way of working, our standard of working, we react the right way and all the rest is nothing.
