Wolff discussed Ferrari move with Hamilton

With five titles under his belt, it is not inconceivable that Lewis Hamilton could equal and even surpass the seven held by Michael Schumacher.

Two of those crowns were won with Benetton, while the other five were won during a golden era with the Maranello outfit that brought to an end a (driver title) drought lasting 21 seasons.

While Kimi Raikkonen remains the most recent champion for the Maranello outfit, Fernando Alonso and Sebastian Vettel both having failed to emulate the Finn, even though he is currently with arguably the best team in the world, Toto Wolff admits that he and Hamilton have discussed the possibility of the Briton joining the Italian legends.

"You have to acknowledge that probably it's in every driver's head to drive at Ferrari one day," Wolff admitted. "It's the most iconic, historic Formula One brand out there and I totally respect if a driver has the desire to drive at Ferrari.

"Even within the team we have discussed it and with Lewis we have discussed it and we have agreed on the topic," he revealed. "We had the discussion when we negotiated the last contract and I think that you just have to be open-minded and understand that drivers will explore opportunities that exist and benchmark themselves."

Of course, should he make the move - which considering the Italian team's current form would cause more shock waves than when he left McLaren for Brackley - Hamilton would follow in the steps of a number of other British drivers who raced for the Scuderia.

That said, only two of them achieved championship success while at Maranello, Mike Hawthorn in 1958 and John Surtees in 1964.
