A surprise decision to change the date of the Six Hours of Fuji will allow Fernando Alonso to contest the full 2018 WEC season.

Though the decision has not gone down well with many rival teams and drivers, it was announced today that the Fuji event has been moved forward a week in order that it no longer clashes with the United States Grand Prix, thereby enabling Alonso to contest both events.

Late last month McLaren confirmed that it had granted Alonso permission to contest Le Mans and the WEC, the Spaniard keen to add the French classic as he pursues him dream of the Triple Crown.

Alonso will share his Toyota with two former F1 drivers, Sebastien Buemi and Kazuki Nakajima, in a season stretching from May 2018 to June 2019 that comprises eight rounds including two editions of the Le Mans classic.

Last year Alonso skipped the Monaco Grand Prix in an attempt to win the Indy 500 - which along with Le Mans and the Monaco GP forms the Triple Crown - his bid ended by a Honda engine failure.

Following a private test the Spaniard described the 2018 Toyota as a "rocket ship".
