The women most likely to break into Formula One

NEWS STORY
27/07/2015

Susie Wolff has admitted that she faces a struggle to break into Formula One and achieve her dream of racing in a grand prix.

Wolff made history for women in the sport when she became the first woman in 20 years to feature in a Formula One weekend, taking part in practice sessions as a test driver for Williams on four separate occasions in 2014 and 2015.

But she has confessed that the prospect of facing another winter of uncertainty might lead her to give up on her dream, and if she does decide not to continue it will be a blow to aspiring female drivers everywhere.

But Wolff is not carrying the hopes of women in Formula One on her own, she is one of a number of talented drivers who stand a great chance of breaking down gender barriers in motorsport’s top competition.

Supporters all over the world would no doubt flock to races to see a female driver go up against the men in a grand prix, and the prospect would likely attract millions more who watch live formula 1 streaming online at playlivestream.com and on television.

Here is a reminder of the ladies who, along with Wolff, currently seem most likely to make that leap.

Carmen Jorda

Lotus development driver Carmen Lotus has recently taken an opposing view to Wolff in the debate about the best way forward for women in the sport.

Responding to Bernie Ecclestone’s suggestion that an all-female series could be created, Wolff said that she would not be interested in winning such a race.

But Jorda, who started out in the Firestone Indy Lights Series, before graduating to GP3 with Ocean Racing Technology, said that a female F1 competition could be the right answer.

If she can continue her progress as a development driver at Lotus, Jorda could be one of the drivers to pave the way for women in F1.

Danica Patrick

At 33, Danica Patrick is a year older than Susie Wolff, and may too be feeling the frustration at not yet having broken into Formula One.

But her achievements in her career to date have nevertheless made her the most successful woman in the history of American open-wheel racing.

Patrick was due to test for Honda ahead of the 2008 Formula One season, but Honda sadly retracted their entire entry from the competition, and left Patrick without a shot at the big time.

She has since moved from IndyCar into NASCAR, and continues to rack up respectable positions for Stewart-Haas Racing, but, despite Ecclestone’s open admiration for her achievements, it seems time might be against any hopes she may have of racing in Formula One.
