Singapore tweaks to improve racing

NEWS STORY
28/07/2015

One of the more popular new additions to the calendar, it must be said that organisers of the Singapore Grand Prix do not rest and their laurels and continually seek ways to improve the show.

As the sport heads off on its summer holidays, officials have announced that closer racing is expected this year following enhancements which include the alignment of the track between Turns 11 and 13 to dove-tail with the new Civic District enhancement plans.

The right-hand Turn 11 will remain, but will be re-aligned to sit tighter with the left-hand side of Fullerton Road for a slightly slower corner speed compared to 2014.

The left-hand Turn 12 will also be modified slightly so that drivers now enter the left lane of Anderson Bridge, before accelerating towards Turn 13 at 200km/h (125 mph) which is a similar speed to 2014.

The Turn 13 hairpin will be widened by one metre to enable more overtaking opportunities.

"It is a fantastic challenge to translate changes to Singapore's Civic District into improvements to the circuit," said Senior Project Manager and Engineering Track Manager, Jonathan Giesecke who is overseeing the changes. "I expect the modifications from Turns 11 to 13 will enable closer racing and the potential for additional passing opportunities."

"Marina Bay is one of the best new tracks. At night, bumpy surface, very hot, it's challenging! Will be the Asian Monaco if it stays at the calendar for a long time."

"@F One.....couldn't agree more.
This is one boring race, with or without Flabio's input."

"The best "Tweak" would be to remove this awful track from the calender.
The whole night race idea is a horrible gimmick too. And with the whole green agenda these days it's especially stupid."

"Can somebody explain why this minor tweak should improve the race so much?"
