Verstappen penalised for Monaco crash

NEWS STORY
24/05/2015

Max Verstappen has been penalised for the accident which turned today's race on its head.

In a canny move, the Dutch youngster latched on to the back of Sebastian Vettel as he weaved through the backmarkers, aided by waved blue flags.

As the Ferrari prepared to lap Romain Grosjean the Toro Rosso driver prepared to take full advantage, but the Frenchman was fully prepared. Letting the Ferrari past, the Lotus driver then returned to the racing line to halt Verstappen's progress.

For the next couple of laps the pair ran nose to tail until Verstappen finally made a lunge at Ste Devote, hitting the right-rear of the Lotus and subsequently spearing into the barriers.

The resultant Safety Car was to turn the race on its head, Lewis Hamilton making a stop for tyres that was to subsequently rob him of certain victory.

Meanwhile, the Race Stewards, having investigated the Verstappen crash deemed the youngster caused the collision with Grosjean, as defined by Article 16.1 of the FIA Formula One Sporting Regulations.

As a result Verstappen is given a 5-place grid penalty for the Canadian Grand Prix and 2 penalty points.

"To me, on TV, it certainly looked like the closing speed between the two cars (right before the contact) was a little "funny" . . . but in the end, the driver following needs to not run into the car leading! If MaxV made his move that split second earlier, Grosjean would have been toast. I'd have probably written it off as a racing incident, but with the way penalties are handed out these days, Max needs to take it as a lesson learned and carry on. (In the right car, he will be well up the field.)"

"Data has showed that Grosjean braked earlier that a round before. Meaning it was an obvious brake test, which since the Schumacher/Coulthard incident on Spa, is prohibited. This means that it was actually Grosjean who cuased, or at least had a big part in causing the collision. Therefore it is a bit weird that the FIA punishes Verstappen. In my humble opinion they could have called it a racing incident. This decision, to me smells a bit to French chauvinism..."

"Well he deserved that, but he was the only one showing any progress today. He made a rookie mistake but the rest of the field have done the same at one point or other. Who can forget Michael going into the back of Coulthard at Spa in the rain.

The rest of his race was awesome. Following Vettel past his rivals was fun to watch. This year I think he has proven his place in F1. He is a star of the future. Let's hope he learns from today.

What did his dad have to say about it ..."
