TV presenter suspended for Alonso tweet

NEWS STORY
14/04/2015

A TV presenter with Sky Italia has been suspended for comments she tweeted in reference to Fernando Alonso.

It's just what F1 needs, another spat.

As one media outlet claims "Mercedes could bring in team orders for Hamilton and Rosberg, says Toto..." and another " Wolff: Mercedes doesn't need team orders..." it appears another little spat has appeared in the F1 paddock.

Over the weekend, Paola Saluzzi, a presenter with Sky Italia, took to Twitter, in reference to Fernando Alonso's pre-season crash and media claims that at one stage he lost his memory.

In Italian she tweeted: "His memory has returned and he has now remembered how #arrogant and #jealous he is. #hugeidiot"

The tweet was subsequently deleted but Alonso was clearly aware of it, apparently refusing to speak to Sky Italia for the remainder of the weekend. Gazzetta dello Sport subsequently reported that Saluzzi has been suspended.

Contacted by Pitpass, a McLaren spokesman said: "We were astonished and disappointed by Ms Saluzzi’s tweet - which we regarded as rude, inaccurate, inappropriate and gratuitous - and we are pleased that it has been deleted. We are aware that Ms Saluzzi has apologised for it, and rightly so."

"This is seriously moronic.
It's free speech. Can't make everyone happy, besides she not entirely off the mark here.
As well as being a total cutie!!!"

"The one thing people forget when they bring up "free speech" is that the concept only relates to the freedom to say what you want without the threat of government action. It doesn't mean there can't be consequences to what you say. In this case, a reporter stopped being professional and lowered herself to name calling. That's her right, but it is also Alonso and McLaren's right to refuse to do interviews with her or her organization and it's Sky Italia's right to ensure they have people in place who can effectively do their job. While we can assume most people in the Italian press are Ferrari supporters at heart and most of their viewers/readers are as well, being a professional means at least faking impartiality a little bit."

"Free speech is one thing, free speech to someone face to face is another and free speech on a worldwide platform is something entirely different and one form of communication we must all learn to grow up with.

Its ALL new, the internet, web and social media in particular are not yet one generation old. Settle down everyone, get used to it, use it correctly and all will be fine.

That said it will take at least three generations for that to happen and for the misgivings and benefits to all be realised.

And be thankful we have sites like these and that they are not there to be abused.

Sermon over."

"@testa rossa - you haven't just figured this out? Surely not.
Why do you suppose all the meaningful negatives, and there are a lot of them, are never discussed?
A meaningful negative , for example, would be REAL dissemination of the FIA whitewash on the Japanese aftermath.....
Just FWIW...."
