Armchair Expert: Numero Uno: Numero Who-knows?

The talk of the paddock since the top four's antics in Malaysia has been that of team orders and number one drivers. It's an unusual topic for the first few races; normally the carefully choreographed oh-we-accidentally-pitted-you-on-the-wrong-lap or 'Fernando is faster than you' song and dance come a bit later on in the season as clear championship contenders emerge. But if recent years have taught us anything, it is that every single point counts and the constructors know it. I think the orders so far have (mostly) been to keep team mates from tangling on track and risking the points. But while the teams' agendas right now may purely be to secure the most points collectively by not bashing into each other, the drivers know that they need to be the one who is ahead in the table to increase their chance of getting the support as the championship contender later on.

The focus since Malaysia has been on Red Bull and Mercedes, but if you look a bit further down the grid you'll see it has not been plain sailing for the expected number one driver in many teams as they tussle for position early on. Let's take a look, in current constructor's table order, at who is winning each inter-team battle as we approach race three.

Red Bull: Vettel leads Webber by 14 points.

Unfortunately for Mark Webber, for all the opinions, apologies and medicine, there is still only one statistic that will count at the end of the season and that is the points table. I think it was mentioned during race coverage, that if Webber had held on to win, the difference would have been 0 points (with the Australian topping the table courtesy of more wins).

The cause of the whole thing was as interesting to me as the result, though. Webber had Vettel rattled again. He'd made the better call on strategy early on, and while he was 'managing his tyres', Vettel seemed to be getting a bit panicky with the threat of a couple of Mercedes looming by his back wing. His growing frustration made for great viewing though, and was reminiscent of when he fumbled his way past Karthikeyan in Malaysia last year. Has Webber done enough to unsettle his young triple world champion team mate and take the challenge to him, or has it done more bad than good for the Australian?

Lotus: Raikkonen leads Grosjean by 22 points.

Kimi definitely got off to the better start with that awesome drive to win from seventh in Melbourne but he lost some credit to Grosjean in Malaysia. Like Vettel, Kimi looked a bit ragged: particularly around turn 13. Grosjean drove another clean race. And who said the Lotus trait of looking after its tyres would help it in the heat of Malaysia. (an easier track to overtake on than Melbourne too?) Eric Boullier suggested afterwards that all was lost in the first few wet laps, from that point on the Lotus was as good for pace as the leaders. In that case, it would be nice to see what it can do in a dry qualifying and race.

Ferrari: Massa leads Alonso by 4 points.
