Alonso wins Madonna kart event

18/01/2013

Hoping it was a portent of the F1 season to come, Fernando Alonso got his year off to a perfect start by winning the karting event at Madonna di Campiglio tonight, despite an early clash with teammate Felipe Massa.

The event, which took place on the ice lake at Campiglio, saw the Ferrari drivers take on the Ducati team riders.

Starting alongside Massa, Alonso soon found himself at the back of the field following a spin however, he fought his way back through the field to take victory in the first leg.

He won the second leg also, in a race in which the starting grid was based on the reverse order of the previous race result. It took the Spaniard just a handful of laps to work his way up into the lead, thus finishing first overall, ahead of Massa and Giancarlo Fisichella.

Earlier in the day, the Ferrari men took part in the traditional ski race, where the winner in the drivers' category was Giancarlo Fisichella who finished ahead of Felipe and Dudu Massa.
