Controlled explosion in Monaco paddock

25/05/2012

Bomb disposal experts carried out a controlled explosion of a suspect package in the Monaco paddock last night.

The disposal team was called at around 21:45 (local time) after a suspicious plastic box was found outside the entrance to the media centre close to Rascasse.

Despite the fact that numerous parties were about to get underway, this being the playground of the rich and famous, the area around Rascasse was closed down, though a small crowd still gathered to watch proceedings.

After around twenty minutes the package was deliberately exploded, its contents found to be nothing but cabling.

Nonetheless, it is the second time in as many years that the bomb disposal unit has been summoned to the Monaco paddock.
