The future at Ferrari

FEATURE BY GUEST AUTHORS

In nearly every sport, there is always a team that athletes dream of being part of. In Formula One, the team that many young aspiring racing drivers dream of racing for is Ferrari. The Scuderia has been in Formula One since the sport began, and the Maranello based outfit also the most successful on the grid. Many ambitious youngsters dream of adding their name to the likes of Ascari, Lauda, Scheckter and, of course, Schumacher.

At the moment however, the team appears to be at a bit of a cross roads in terms of its future driver line up. Whilst Fernando Alonso will remain with the team long term, there still remains a great deal of speculation as to who could partner him in the future. Since suffering his awful head injury in Hungary in 2009, many predict Felipe Massa to leave the team at the end of this season. After a disappointing 2010 and an even worse 2011, Ferrari is perhaps right to be looking at possible candidates to replace the Brazilian. But the question is who should they choose?

Ferrari's last success in the Constructors' Championship came in 2008, and with every season that passes, the pressure increases. The dilemma that currently faces Ferrari is whether they want a strong second driver in the team. A competitive driver would arguably help Ferrari in its attempt to win the constructors' title, but could upset the current harmony within the team with Fernando. So should Ferrari simply go back to the days of having a good supporting driver to help Alonso's title charge like they had in the Schumacher era?

One possible candidate for the Ferrari drive is Robert Kubica. Before being injured in a rally accident last February, Kubica had been linked to Ferrari. It is well known that Alonso and Kubica share a strong friendship, but would that become strained if the two were in the same team? With Kubica now out of contract at Lotus, Ferrari looks like the Pole's only way back into the sport. It is alleged that Ferrari is happy to give Kubica a test later this year, when he has fully recovered from his injuries.

But surely this would be perceived as a massive risk. Whilst Robert's talent was clear to see before the accident, nobody knows for certain if he'll ever be the same driver again. There remain doubts as to whether he'll still have the dexterity needed in his injured hand and what long term mental effects the crash has had on him. His comeback was dealt another blow just recently after he reportedly broke his leg after falling on ice. There is evidence in Felipe Massa that a driver is not at the same level after an accident as he was before, and however good it would be to see Robert's comeback, surely it would be equally disappointing to see him as a shell of his former self.

Would Ferrari have the time and patience to nurture Kubica should he initially struggle? You'd think not, as that seems to be the basis of why some team members in Ferrari are keen to see Massa replaced.
