Alonso in quit threat

NEWS STORY

While a number of the manufacturers have made it clear that they are far from happy that a single customer engine could be introduced in 2010, most notably Ferrari who have threatened to quit, Fernando Alonso is the first of the front-running drivers to follow suit.

Speaking at a Renault promotional event in Spain, the two-time World Champion, when asked about the FIA's single-engine proposal, said: "If they approved that, it would be the last straw. It would be time to think about retirement."

While many are looking forward to the raft of new rules due to be introduced next year, rules which effectively see all the teams starting on an equal basis, it is widely felt that the customer powertrain proposal being considered for 2010 is a step too far.

"In 2005 we had a V10 engine with 1,000 horsepower," said Alonso. "That was what was exciting for the driver, motor racing at the limit.

"We have now gone from futuristic to cars without grip or electronic aids which look like something from the past," he added, echoing the thoughts of many fans.

Looking ahead to next season, however, the Spaniard is far more confident, predicting that the new rules could aid him in his quest for a third title.

"Next year I will try to be champion," said the Renault driver, who, against all odds, won two races this season. "You can't allow yourself to start the championship without thinking you're going to win.

"My objective is to win the title," he added. "It's a very clear objective, although it may have to be altered as the year goes on. The advantage is that practically everybody is starting from zero."
