Mexico Preview: Team Malaysia

NEWS STORY

A1 Team Malaysia will be racing in Mexico this weekend, with the ninth round of the A1GP World Cup of Motorsport taking place in the capital city. The Series raced in the country last season, but this is the first event to be hosted at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez in Mexico City, named after Mexico's most famous motor racing brothers, Ricardo and Pedro Rodriguez.

The Malaysian team is joined by a new rookie driver, who will be making his race weekend debut for the team in Mexico and performing rookie duties for the remainder of the season. Aaron Lim, 22, drove the A1 Team Malaysia car in a test session at Silverstone in the UK last summer, but this will be his first experience of an A1GP event.

Lim says of the weekend ahead, "I'm heading to Mexico full of excitement. It's a fantastic opportunity for me and I can't wait to get in the car. It'll be the first time that I've worked with such a professional race team, operating at a high level of international motorsport, so I'm sure that I'm going to have plenty to learn and many new experiences. I worked with the team briefly at the Silverstone test, so I already know many of the people and I'm hoping that this will help me to settle in quickly. I'll be aiming to do the best job that I can for the team and for my country."

Alex Yoong will be returning to the cockpit after a four week break and his aim is to be on the pace as quickly as possible. In the last few races the team has struggled to find the optimum car set-up in the early practice sessions, although they've won through in the end. A combination of strong teamwork and Yoong's driving skills has brought them eight top ten finishes from sixteen races, but they're looking for better qualifying starts in Mexico.

Yoong explains, "We're taking too much time to find the best set up for the car to suit the circuit we're on and that's put extra pressure on us, particularly in qualifying which is so important in A1GP. The Sprint race which is usually only around 10 laps or so doesn't give us much time to improve on our starting position, so the higher up the grid we can be, the better it is for us. If we can get the car to be well-balanced after the first two practices, we can then really push hard as we head into qualifying.

"It's the race results that count and bring us championship points, so whatever happens, it's our goal to keep bringing home strong finishes. I'm looking forward to Aaron assisting us with our race preparations as well and we welcome him on board with the team.

"This track is going to be a challenge for all the drivers. Most of us have never raced here, it's a high altitude location, and the track is very quick, so I it'll be an interesting weekend."

Jack Cunningham, Chief Executive of A1 Team Malaysia adds, "The team is very pleased to be working with Aaron this weekend and we are proud to be able to support a young Malaysian at this level of international motorsport. We have recognised the areas that we need to improve on and we are working hard on them. With 6 races still to go in the remaining three events of the season and therefore 6 opportunities to score points, our goal is to improve our current position in the championship as best we can."
