US GP: Ecclestone confident for 2006 and beyond

As Formula One attempts to put the debacle that was the 2005 United States Grand Prix firmly behind it, Bernie Ecclestone has said that he is fully confident for the future of the event.

"I hope everybody understands - or will if they don't now - why it all happened," he told the Associated Press, referring to the events of June 19, when just six cars 'contested' the ninth round of the 2005 World Championship.

"It wasn't the fault of Formula One Management," he continued, "it wasn't the fault of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, it wasn't the fault basically of the teams.

"It was the fact that Michelin supplied the wrong tyres for that circuit and it would have been dangerous to run.

"If somebody would have been killed it would have been more or less murder," he added, "because we knew it was dangerous. So to send people out like that would have been totally irresponsible.

"Unless something drastic comes up which is going to preclude Tony (George) from putting the event on, I don't see any problems."
