It's understood that the typhoon has now changed course and is heading directly for Suzuka, the eye of the storm hitting the track at midday on Saturday.

Race organizers are said to be extremely worried about the threat posed by grandstands and advertising hoardings collapsing or being blown about. Consequently, race officials are to take down all the ad boards around the circuit.

Furthermore, in the event of the storm hitting Suzuka, the medical helicopter would not be able to fly.

At 07:05 GMT today, FIA spokesman Richard Woods has confirmed to Pitpass that Charlie Whiting will hold a meeting with race stewards at 17:30 (local time) today, to discuss the situation, with a formal announcement due at 18:00 ) local time).

At this stage it's thought that there will be no on-track activity on Saturday, but this will be confirmed at 18:00 (local time).

Should this be the case, and qualifying is cancelled, the FIA and race officials would look into how the grid for the race might be decided, with the most likely scenario being some form of qualifying session on Sunday morning.
