Pitpass and Renault

NEWS STORY
06/09/2004

Although Pitpass is not meant to display any form of bias or favouritism, it is an unfortunate fact that from time to time readers will detect it in our news reports and features.

As journalists we like to think that we act responsibly and reports the facts, without distortion or embellishment and without trying to manipulate the truth, and thereby our readers, who have come to rely on us.

Because F1 is a sport, and therefore fun, we do at times tend to trivialise certain issues, but we hope that our regular readers will appreciate this. We strongly believe that as a respected F1 news site our readers will understand that we are here to inform but also entertain.

With regards bias, we must confess that that there are drivers and teams that we tend to see in a 'favourable light', in much the same way that there are others that we have been known to give a 'hard time'.

In the past we have shown a certain, though hopefully small, amount of favouritism towards Renault.

Our feelings towards Renault are not based merely on the French outfit's innovative approach to F1 - it introduced the turbocharger and the V10 - but also to its 'freshness', its sense of fun.

The statistics are enough: Renault, both as an engine and car manufacturer has 97 Grands Prix wins to its credit, with 6 constructors' championships and 5 drivers' titles.

Having failed to make the most - publicity-wise - of its success with Williams and Benetton in the 90s, the French outfit has returned to F1 in its right, and with the help of a strong publicity machine, innovative thinking and one of the best media departments in the F1 pitlane, is catching the imagination of race fans.

Sadly, recent events - or rather an event - means that Pitpass will seriously have to re-think its attitude towards Renault, and at this point in time its unclear if the bridges can ever be rebuilt.

Pitpass editor Chris Balfe was too distraught to give the precise reason for what is hopefully a temporary 'falling out' with the French manufacturer. Overcome with emotion, north London born Balfe was too upset to talk, instead he merely pointed to a picture that lay on his office floor, apparently sent by a 'well wisher'.
