Alonso tops Monza timesheets on final day

Renault's Fernando Alonso topped the timesheets on the final day of testing at the Autodromo Nazionale Monza, with teammate Jarno Trulli finishing fifth quickest.

The final day got underway in cool, misty conditions, but as the session progressed, the ambient temperature reached 33 degrees C, while the track temperature hit 45 degrees C.

Both Renault drivers concentrated on set-up work throughout the day, making good improvements to the car's handling during both sessions.

"Our final day of testing at Monza was relatively trouble-free," said chief test engineer, Christian Silk, "with both drivers concentrating on set-up work ahead of next weekend's race. They have achieved a balance they are reasonably happy with, and this will provide a good starting point for them next Friday in free practice for the race. Overall, we have had a successful week, making our tyre choice for the Grand Prix and without experiencing any mechanical problems with the engines at all, which is an extremely encouraging sign."

Giving Alonso a close run for his money was BAR's Jenson Button, who completed a tyre evaluation programme in the morning before switching to an aerodynamic programme in the afternoon. Teammate Anthony Davidson lost track-time in the morning as a result of "driveline issues", in the afternoon he focussed on a suspension change and testing different tyre variations.

Thursday's pace-setter, Antonio Pizzonia was the quicker of the two WilliamsF1 drivers, though he failed to match his previous time, which constitutes an unofficial lap record. Both Antonio and Juan Pablo Montoya focussed on set-ups and aero development work, in addition to brake testing and tyre evaluations.

Following Michael Schumacher's high-speed crash on Thursday, Luca Badoer was Ferrari's sole representative at Monza on Friday. The Italian concentrated on tyre development and on car set-up.

As far as Schumacher's accident is concerned, Bridgestone is still investigating the cause of the 'blow out', but has yet to reach a conclusion. It's believed that the German was using a special compound used recently in Hungary.

McLaren had Kimi Raikkonen and Alexander Wurz on duty, the Finn continued to evaluate a new front wing for the Woking outfit. The Spa winner lost track-time in the morning following a fluid leak, which caused him to stop out on track.

Christian Klien continues to outpace teammate Mark Webber, the Austrian posting a best time half-a-second quicker than his Australian teammate.

Felipe Massa was eleventh quickest in the Sauber, the Brazilian taking over from Giancarlo Fisichella. "We used our final test day to undertake a data verification with Felipe which also included further long-runs in conjunction with our Bridgestone tyre work," explained Giampaolo Dall'Ara. "We were able to make our decisions concerning brakes and tyres for our two drivers for Monza and also finalised the assessment of our low downforce package.

"We completed our planned programme without major technical problems and made some good progress in race preparation during those three days."

Olivier Panis was the latest driver to suffer a tyre problem, however this time it was not a 'tyre failure', but merely a deflation, caused, according to Michelin, by someone to replace a valve cap. Nonetheless, Olivier hit the barriers at the second chicane, thankfully without causing too much damage. "It was an abrupt end to the test but thankfully I am completely okay," said the Frenchman.

Panis was joined by Ricardo Zonta, who feels this week's test has been productive. "Today was a better day," said the Brazilian, "with much more mileage completed. That gave us time to improve the balance and carry out a lot of back-to-back runs looking mainly at tyres and traction control. Things are looking good for a positive weekend back here for the Italian Grand Prix."

Propping up the timesheets was Nick Heidfeld in the Jordan EJ14, the German over a second slower than his nearest rival.
