We're getting there, says Bernie

Speaking earlier today, Bernie Ecclestone admitted that Silverstone is "getting there" when it comes to updating its facilities.

Prior to the race, Ecclestone said that the British Grand Prix "should be tops" but again intimated that the race was safe at the Northampton airfield circuit for the next couple of years.

He also took the opportunity to slam the qualifying system which saw cars vying to be slowest due to threatening weather. He called it "stupid" and "mad" and once again emphasised that it has to be changed.

When asked about the possibility of 19 races in 2005, he said "no, we'll bring it down to 17" even though dates have already been booked for 19.

The F1 supremo also admitted that he was surprised by the popularity of the F1 parade in London last week. "I thought we may see 20,000 people," said Ecclestone of the crowds estimated to be 150,000 or more. "It shows how popular Formula One is," he said, "but we need to put on a better show and we need to bring costs down."
