F1 Commission meets today

NEWS STORY
28/06/2004

The Formula One Commission meets in London today, for what should be an exceedingly lively 'discussion'.

In addition to relatively minor matters, such as rubber-stamping Bernie Ecclestone's proposed new format for qualifying, the commission must discuss issues that will affect the very future of the sport.

At a time when the sport is looking to cut costs, yet increase TV viewing figures and race attendance, FIA President Max Mosley, is seeking to push through a raft of radical changes, fully prepared to use force if necessary.

Mosley is concerned not only by the ever-increasing costs of participation in F1, but also the rising speeds, fearing that the sport is becoming complacent. His fears will have increased in the aftermath of last weekend's United States GP.

Mosley has proposed a 2.4 litre V8 configuration for F1, but BMW has already warned that it could pull out of F1 should this come about.

All in all we can expect a lively meeting, though going on previous meetings of the F1 Commission it's unlikely that much will be settled today. In any event, any agreement reached today, has to be sanctioned by the FIA World Motor Sport Council.
