Max Verstappen: a future world champion?

NEWS STORY
14/08/2016

Young Max Verstappen has already achieved so much since he broke into Formula One just 18 months ago but many believe that the Dutch starlet is destined for greatness. He is widely regarded as motorsport's most talented youngster and he still has plenty to learn. At just 18 years old, Verstappen's time will come – he is far too gifted to fail. The teenager has already showcased his skill on a number of occasions and it is only a matter of time before he moulds into a consistent, elite Formula One star.

The Red Bull star is on the road to greatness; there's no doubt about it. Since bursting onto the scene in 2015, Verstappen has broken a number of long-standing records and looks right at home whilst competing against seasoned professionals such as Fernando Alonso, Felipe Massa and Jenson Button. Whilst many believe Verstappen still has a way to go before he is crowned Formula One champion, his early form suggests that the Red Bull driver will enjoy a very successful career in the sport. However, some F1 fans have suggested that he is already one of the top drivers in the business...

On his day, the 18-year-old has shown that he can do it all. Verstappen can attack without being over-zealous, he can defend consistently without hindering his own chances of glory and he can lead from the front when required. Ultimately, the youngster is capable of holding his own in most scenarios and he will only improve further as he grows accustomed to the sport. After all, his experience since earning promotion to Red Bull's primary team will stand him in good stead for the future.

Last season, Leicester City won the Premier League title – a victory that reminded us of how unpredictable sport can be. Whilst it is unlikely, Verstappen still has an outside chance to win the world championship this season and punters can back the teenager at 300/1 in Betway's sports betting odds. If truth be told, a title triumph may be a little far-fetched right now; not because of a lack of talent but more down to Mercedes' dominance and Red Bull's struggles off the track. However, it wouldn't be a huge surprise to see the 18-year-old win at least one more race between now and the end of the season. Write him off at your peril...

If Verstappen can finish in the top five this season, his team will be incredibly pleased. The Dutch driver has the potential but he needs the engineers to produce a competitive car and it is hard to fault Red Bull in 2016. Mercedes are still ahead of the rest but the English-based side are now a lot closer to their championship rivals. Only time will tell but Verstappen could be the face of Red Bull for the foreseeable future and he could dominate like Sebastian Vettel did if his team can build a monster car for the coming years.

Max Verstappen isn't the finished article but he is almost there. At 18 years old, he should come on leaps and bounds and he must remain focused as he looks to mature into the best driver on the planet. Who knows, we could be seeing him lift the world title in the not-so-distant future; and it would take a brave man to back against him becoming a multiple world champion if he continues to shine.
