Frentzen considering IRL switch

With just five seats available in F1 for 2004, thirty-six-year-old Heinz-Harald Frentzen appreciates the fact that his options are limited.

Jaguar has one seat up for grabs whilst Jordan and Minardi both have two, that said, in light of the German's shock sacking by Jordan in 2001 it's highly unlikely he'd be willing to return, though he recently said he might providing his financial demands were met. This at a time when the Irish team is clearly struggling.

With his F1 options clearly running out Frentzen has now revealed that he has held talks with IRL team owner, and former F1 star, Eddie Cheever, with a view to racing for his team next season.

"I can easily imagine a switch to the US," Frentzen told Auto Bild. "As a passionate race driver, other kinds of driving excite me, even on an oval."

The three-time GP winner has also been linked with a move to DTM, while some feel he would make a very useful F1 test driver.

In 2003 Frentzen returned to the Red Bull sponsored Sauber team, coincidentally Cheever's team is also sponsored by the energy drink.
