Mercedes leads Ferrari in terms of test reliability

03/03/2019
NEWS STORY

Week two of pre-season testing saw Ferrari lose track time for a number of reasons.

First, Charles Leclerc was hit by a cooling issue, and then Sebastian Vettel crashed the SF90, leaving his teammate only able to complete a solitary install lap on Wednesday afternoon.

On Friday, despite posting the best time of the morning - and indeed the test - an electrics issue brought the Maranello outfit's programme to an early end.

For Mercedes it was pretty much a trouble-free week, the German outfit suffering only the occasional minor glitch.

That said, handling and tyre graining issues leave the world champions not entirely happy as they head to Melbourne, though Lewis Hamilton's late surge which put the Briton within 0.003s of his rivals pace appears to have quelled talk that Ferrari has the advantage.

Pierre Gasly's crash impacted the Frenchman's running and carried over to hit Max Verstappen's programme next day, the Dutchman yet to stretch the Red Bull's legs and seemingly yet to try anything other than the middle-of-the-range C3 tyres.

As shown in the table below, Mercedes completed the most mileage during testing, ahead of Ferrari, Renault, Toro Rosso and Alfa Romeo.

All the team show increased mileage compared to 2018, but let's not forget that last year's programme was compromised by the weather, including snow.

That said, Williams' mileage is down 30% and Racing Point, formerly Force India, down 12.1%

In terms of engines, Ferrari leads the way, with Mercedes compromised by the lack of running for Williams, and, to a certain extent, Racing Point.

Renault-powered teams completed 15.7% less mileage this year than in 2018, due, of course to the fact that the French manufacturer is only supplying two teams this season, which - other than improved reliability – partly explains the fact that Honda's mileage is up 115%.

While Vettel is quickest, Hamilton completed the most laps, the Briton comfortably ahead of teammate Bottas, Vettel, Hulkenberg, Raikkonen and Albon.

Of course, some bright spark will claim that such info is meaningless as we don't know about fuel loads, 'party modes' or how many engines were used.

Naturally the teams want to play their cards as close to their chests as possible, and it won't be until qualifying in Melbourne that we get a much better idea of the true pecking order.

Indeed, if we had all the relevant information we would probably be heading to F1's bookmaker of choice to place out bets.

In addition to providing to total mileage completed by each driver, team and engine manufacturer, and the best overall times, we have included the best times posted by drivers on tyres other than those on which they posted their best overall times of the test.
