Pirelli reveals markings for test tyres

With some fans confused by the various names and colours attributed to the seven compounds used in 2018, this year there will be just three colours at each Grand Prix.

The softest tyres will feature a red stripe, the medium yellow and the hardest white.

However, with five compounds available, this has caused some confusions as the hardest (red) at one race might well be the medium (yellow) at another, consequently Pirelli is essentially adopting a 'tyres for dummies' approach.

All five slick tyre compounds will be seen in testing this year, but in only three colours, white yellow and red.

To help distinguish them, the hardest and softest tyres available won't carry stripes on the sidewalls.

"Normally we will only see three colours at every race," explains Mario Isola, "so we're only using three colours at the tests as well.

"But we want to make sure that people can tell the compounds apart," he adds. "As a result, the very hardest and softest tyres won't be marked with stripes: only the colours will vary. This will be the case for the in-season tests as well."
