While the reaction from fans might have left the sport's powers-that-be a little underwhelmed, world champion Lewis Hamilton was quick to give his seal of approval to the look unveiled to the media at Singapore on Friday.

"I'm def gonna be driving if cars look like this," he posted on his Instagram account. "Just please bring a V12 or V10 back."

However, Ferrari team boss Maurizio Arrivabene was among those unimpressed by the proposed new look.

"I was looking at the car presented a couple of days ago by Ross," he told reporters.

"It's a good exercise," he added. "I was asking our engineers what they thought about this, they said it's a bit underwhelming in their opinion and it looks like an old ChampCar. But it's an exercise."

"I see no reason why we can't have exciting-looking cars," said F1 technical boss Ross Brawn, whose team is responsible for the look. "It frustrates me when a car in a video game looks better than a car that we're racing out on the track.

"We're listening to what the fans want," he insisted, "we want to engage with their passion, we want them to feel that Formula One is listening to them."
