NEWS STORY

Ahead of today's opening practice session, the air temperature is 27 degrees C, while the track temperature is 53 degrees.

With the cars and tyres wider this year, a number of drivers have expressed concern at the tight twisty part of the circuit where the track winds around the Castle.

Not for the first time, before a wheel has turned or an engine fired up, both McLaren drivers have grid penalties (15 places) having fitted new MGU-Hs and Turbos.

With its smooth track surface, Mercedes is expected to struggle much as it did in Monaco, as it tries to get its tyres into the correct temperature window, Pirelli predicting it could take two laps.

As the lights go green there is a flurry of activity and in no time at all there are 15 drivers on track, among them Bottas and the Ferraris.

As Grosjean reports that his car is pulling to the left under braking, Verstappen heads out sporting a shed load of sensors.

A good mixture of softs and mediums, with Wehrlein the only driver on the supersofts.

Stroll complains that his brake pedal is "very, very soft".

A number of cars sporting lots of sensors like Verstappen's Red Bull, among them Palmer's Renault and Perez' Force India.

A big lock-up for Grosjean as the Frenchman continues to complain about the car under braking though he is assured temperatures on both sides are equal.

As the Frenchman posts the first time of the day (52.952), Massa heads out for the first time, the last driver to make an appearance.

Magnussen posts 50.446 only to be leapfrogged by teammate Grosjean (49.947) again moments later.

Despite being late to the party, Massa goes straight to the head of the timesheet, the Brazilian crossing the line at 48.002, teammate Stroll posts 53.932.

"Keep doing lift and coast at the big braking events," Grosjean is told, as Stroll is struggling getting his tyres up to temperature. As Ocon weaves from side to side it is clear that the Canadian isn't the only one.

"We've seen the medium, soft and supersoft compounds out already," says Pirelli. "But how much more will we be seeing of the medium this weekend?"

Verstappen complains that his "battery is completely empty".

Massa improves to 46.907, as Vettel goes fourth (49.896), Stroll and Alonso.

A spin for Massa at T1 as Ricciardo goes ninth and Ocon tenth. The Brazilian is told to keep the temperature in the front tyres.

Having improves to second (48.108), Vettel has a major wobble at T16. Moments later, teammate Raikkonen heads down the escape road at T15, a corner that caused more than a few problems last year.

A 48.004 sees Verstappen go third, the Red Bull driver the highest-placed runner on the medium rubber.

Twenty-eight minutes into the session, and Hamilton heads out again, along with Bottas, Sainz, Ericsson, Vandoorne and Kvyat, he has yet to post a time.

The Briton's first flying lap sees him post 47.962 to go seventh, while Bottas posts 49.855 to go thirteenth. The Finn subsequently improves to 47.065.

Verstappen improves to second with a 47.006, the Dutchman now 0.284s off Massa's pace.

A lock-up for Palmer in T1 as Perez improves to fifth with a 47.038 before banging in a 46.295 to go top.

As Hamilton posts 46.617 to go second, Bottas spins at T12 after clipping the kerb.

A 45.497 sees Hamilton take the top spot, as Verstappen is advised that though he has lost second to Perez the Mexican was on softs.

As Ricciardo, like his teammate on mediums, improves to sixth, Ocon goes fifth with a 46.892.

After 36 minutes or running, neither Toro Rosso driver has posted a time, both having completed just 4 laps.

In the speed trap, Alonso is around 30 km/h slower than Hamilton.

As we reach the 40-minute mark, when the extra set of tyres has to be handed back, it's: Hamilton, Perez, Verstappen, Massa, Ocon, Ricciardo, Vettel, Bottas, Raikkonen and Magnussen.

There follows several minutes of nothing, silence falls over the track.

"As usual, FP1 is not hugely representative of likely race conditions," admits Pirelli. "Expect hotter weather in FP2. And softer compounds."

After seven minute of inactivity, Grosjean's Renault fires up and heads out. He is followed by Sainz.

After another installation lap, Sainz is back in the pits, still to post a time.

Hulkenberg is told to go off-line at T2, advised that there are three (count 'em, three) manhole covers that need to be avoided.

Now on the supersofts, having previously run the mediums, Verstappen goes quickest with a 45.409, 0.088s clear of Hamilton, whose time was on softs.

Going quickest in S2, Verstappen raises the bar with a 44.762, thereby putting 0.735s of daylight between himself and Hamilton. Bottas posts 45.737 to go third.

In quick succession, Verstappen and Palmer make use of the escape road at T1. The Dutch driver is advised his front tyre temperatures were down.

At Toro Rosso insists all is fine and that his drivers have simply been doing straight-line testing.

"Drivers are still struggling for grip at the moment," says Pirelli, "but this should improve during the afternoon session."

Quickest in the final two sectors, Verstappen improves to 44.410.

Vettel somehow gets stuck in the cul-de-sac at T8, the German losing over a minute before being able to reverse back on to the track.

Meanwhile, Perez posts 45.398 to go second, teammate Ocon currently fifth.

Another off for Vettel, this time at T3, currently 7th (Raikkonen) and 8th, the Maranello outfit is struggling at the moment.

"I was caught out be traffic," reports Vettel.

Out comes the Red Flag as Perez hits the barriers at T8, the beginning of the tight, twisty climb around the Castle.

Replay shows him clipping the kerb on the inside and then sliding into the barrier on the outside ripping off the right-rear wheel and damaging the front left suspension. Safely out of his car, the Mexican's frustration is obvious.

Just beforehand, Ricciardo had improved to second (44.880) on the supers and Vettel third (44.967) on the softs, while Raikkonen became the latest to head down an escape road.

After a lot of toing and froing, plus lots of manhandling, the Force India is removed from the track and Race Control confirms that the session will resume with 6 minutes remaining.

Ahead of the green light, Ericsson and Sainz are waiting at the end of the pitlane. Kvyat also heads out, the Russian yet to post a time.

Barely back to work, Grosjean heads down the escape road at T2, while Ocon is off at T1.

All but Verstappen, Bottas, Palmer and Perez (natch!) are on track.

As Vettel is told he has just one flying lap available, out come the yellows as Grosjean goes off at T3.

As one would expect, there are no significant improvements.

The session ends, Verstappen is quickest, ahead of Ricciardo, Vettel, Perez, Hamilton, Bottas, Ocon, Massa, Raikkonen and Kvyat.

Stroll is eleventh, ahead of Magnussen, Grosjean, Hulkenberg, Vandoorne, Sainz, Alonso, Palmer, Wehrlein and Ericsson.
