Audi technical director Jorg Zander is to join Sauber next year.

The German, who has enjoyed stints with Toyota, BAR, Williams, Honda, Brawn and even Sauber in a previous incarnation (BMW Sauber), as its chief engineer, left F1 in 2009 to form his own engineering company.

Following an abortive attempt to return to F1 with HRT, he joined Audi Sport last year as its technical director.

With Audi now leaving WEC at the end of the year, Zander is heading to Hinwil to fill the position vacated by Mark Smith on the eve of the current season.

Zander's recruitment is the latest in a number of high profile singings by Sauber since it was bought-out by Longbow Finance in the summer, the Swiss team having recruited Xevi Pujolar, Max Verstappen's former engineer at Toro Rosso, and strategist Ruth Buscombe, whose former teams include Ferrari and Haas.

With the curtailing of Audi's WEC programme a number of quality engineering staff are going to be on the market and it is likely that Sauber may strike again.
