Christian Horner has admitted that his claim that Sebastian Vettel would join Mercedes in 2018 was a joke.

On Thursday, it was reported in the German media, and subsequently picked up elsewhere, that frustrated with Ferrari, Sebastian Vettel would head to Mercedes for 2018.

Ignoring the fact that Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg both have contracts for 2018, though admittedly the German's new deal wasn't agreed until after the story broke, journos pondered how might the pairing of Hamilton and Vettel work.

Speaking in Hungary this morning, Horner admitted that the claim was a "wind-up".

"We had a dinner with some journalists a week or two ago," he told Sky Sports F1, which also ran the original story, "and just as a bit of a wind-up I threw it in there, and suddenly it becomes a sensational story."

What next, Ricciardo to Ferrari in 2018?
