Three-time world champion Lewis Hamilton heads the nominations for the 2016 Laureus World Sports Awards, following a ballot by the world's media.

"I want to say thank you to Laureus for nominating me for the Sportsman of the Year Award," said Hamilton, who previously won in 2008. "I feel very privileged. I'm a big admirer of what Laureus does and it's so great to be a part of it. I wish all the other Nominees the best. I'm really excited to see what the outcome will be. Either way I feel privileged to be among some of the greats."

The Laureus World Sports Awards is an annual award ceremony honouring remarkable individuals from the world of sports along with the greatest sporting achievements throughout the year.

It was established in 1999 by founding patrons Daimler and Richemont and is supported by global partners Mercedes-Benz and IWC Schaffhausen.

Also nominated, unsurprisingly, is the Mercedes AMG Petronas team for Laureus World Team of the Year Award and Max Verstappen, at 17 years and 166 days, the youngest driver ever to start an F1 Grand Prix.
