If it's Wednesday, F1 must be fantastic

Talking of movies, there was a film in late 60s entitled 'If It's Tuesday, This Must Be Belgium', a rom-com featuring one of those infamous groups of tourists (Americans) on a whirlwind 18-day sightseeing tour of Europe.

Looking at events over the last couple of days, there could be room for an F1-based movie entitled, 'If it is Wednesday, F1 must be fantastic'.

For, speaking at the weekend, Bernie Ecclestone said that F1 is "the worst it has ever been", and that he wouldn't pay (cough) to take his family to watch a race.

Lo and behold, a couple of days later, following meetings of the Strategy Group and the F1 Commission which produced a number of changes that have left fans and drivers somewhat bewildered, everything is great again.

"I think now I'd be a bit more confident that we are going to see some good racing," he told Reuters in a telephone interview… possibly because he would be unable to maintain a straight face if questioned in person.

"I think there's lots of things we can do and will be doing," he added. "What people needed was a bit of a shake-up. I seem to be the only person that has thought we should do something in Formula One, to wake everybody up a little bit. And maybe that's what's happened.

"I wasn't talking down the sport at all," he insisted, "quite the opposite. I was trying to sort of explain that unless we did something that's the way we'd be going."
