Mercedes boss Toto Wolff defends decision to keep latest-spec engine for works team.

With the 2015 Constructors' Championship tantalisingly in sight, other than its decision not to supply Red Bull with engines in 2016, Mercedes has also been criticised for its failure to supply its latest spec power unit to its customer teams, Williams, Force India and Lotus.

Speaking in Sochi, where the Red Bull saga is dominating events on track, Wolff explained why the upgraded engine has not found its way to the manufacturer's customers.

"The decision we took is to do an R&D exercise in order to learn more for next year and you can't do this kind of exercise with a customer team," he said. "If you go into a development direction, you can't make eight engines because it could be the case that it was the wrong direction we went in."
