Light at the end of the tunnel for McLaren?

It was a day of mixed emotions for McLaren at Jerez as once again the gremlins strike.

With 32 laps completed - six times the amount Fernando Alonso managed on Sunday, and Jenson Button on Monday - things appeared to be looking up for the Woking team.

However, two tweets on Tuesday afternoon signalled that the Honda-powered team still has some way to go.

"We've had a loss of cooling water pressure & have removed the power unit for inspection," said the team. "That's a long process, so it ends today's running.

"We can replace those components ahead of running tomorrow," it added. "The issue was promptly spotted by Fernando on an out-lap - so quick to trace."

At that stage the Spaniard was seventh fastest of the eight drivers on duty however, he was subsequently leapfrogged by former Ferrari teammate Felipe Massa, one of the last drivers to make the switch to dry tyres, thereby dropping him to last.

Alonso subsequently tweeted: "big step forward".
