Hamilton: Losing title on double points would suck

Clearly, like most of us, no fan of double points, Lewis Hamilton admits that losing the title due to the Bernie Ecclestone inspired gimmick would be awful.

In fact, Ecclestone wanted double points for the final three races of the season, a move which if approved, could have turned the entire season on its head. Instead the supremo had to make do with double points for the season finale in Abu Dhabi.

Pitpass has yet to hear of anyone in favour of the idea, most fearing a title won courtesy of double points would make it almost worthless. But what about losing the title under double points.

"I think the question is 'what is fair?'," said Lewis Hamilton ahead of the United States Grand Prix weekend. "This is the rule that they have brought in for the first time; do I really agree with it? I don't know if any of us agree with it or do not agree with it, but it is the way it is and you just have to deal with it and just hope for the best really.

"It would suck if that was the case... big time," he replied when asked how he would feel if he lost the title in such circumstances, "but I'm not even going to put that negative energy out there. I'm just going to try and do the best job I can with the car that I have and what will be will be, I guess.

"For the future, I wouldn't perhaps advise it for the following years but..." he added, echoing the fears of so many of us.

Asked where he feels his biggest threat comes from, teammate Nico Rosberg or Mercedes worrying reliability, he admitted: "I don't know, I think they are both relatively decent threats. But the guys have worked very hard to eradicate those through the year so I hope that we can all go through these next races together as a tea, without any of those issues."
