Advantage Hamilton in FP2

NEWS STORY

Ahead of today's second free practice session the air temperature is 17 degrees C, while the track temperature is 32 degrees. It is bright but cool.

World championship leader Nico Rosberg was quickest this morning, edging out Mercedes teammate Lewis Hamilton by a mere 0.097s.

While the customer Mercedes teams are expected to give the works outfit the biggest challenge this weekend, in reality it was Ferrari that came off 'best of the rest' earlier. However, it is still very early days.

Williams, regarded as the biggest threat to Mercedes, did their usual this morning, concentrating on testing and playing their cards very close to their chest.

After a couple of disappointing weekends, it was good to see Force India back on form, both drivers in the top eight.

An engine issue meant that Sebastian Vettel missed the last fifteen minutes of running while both McLaren drivers looked competitive.

The big story this morning was the U-turn at Marussia where Max Chilton, having been dropped/stood down (whatever version you want to believe) in favour of Alexander Rossi, is now back in the car for the remainder of the weekend.

There were no major issues in terms of offs though there were a few wobbles, most notably at Pouhon, and a scary moment for Hamilton in Eau Rouge. Spins at La Source also for Ericsson and Raikkonen.

There are two DRS zones, the detection point for the first is 240m before Turn 2, with the activation point 310m after Turn 4. The second detection point is 160m before Turn 18, with the activation point 30m after Turn 19. In terms of tyres, Pirelli is providing the medium and soft, the options making their debut this afternoon.

The lights go green and shortly afterwards Chilton heads down the pitlane. Elsewhere, the cameras pick up on Jos Verstappen and son Max chatting with fellow Dutch Giedo Van der Garde.

In the Red Bull garage mechanics continue to work on Vettel's car.

As Chilton heads back to the pits following his installation lap, there are some ominous dark clouds closing in.

With an eye on the weather more and more drivers take to the track including Magnussen, Maldonado and Button.

It's all over for Maldonado who has gone off into the barriers at Pouhon. Replay shows the Lotus driver begin to lose the car coming out of T9 and finally coming to grief as he heads into Pouhon. The session is immediately red flagged.

Magnussen is currently quickest (52.677), ahead of Bianchi and Lotterer.

The session resumes and in no time at all there are cars on track, one side of the track basked in sunshine the other overshadowed by that big dark cloud.

A 52.285 sees Button go quickest, with Kvyat going second on 52.647.

No sooner has Massa (52.214) taken the top spot than Rosberg (52.065) and then Hamilton (51.989) go quicker.

Alonso goes quickest with a 51.693 but Rosberg is already on a hot lap, the German going quickest in S1.

As Christian Horner confirms that Vettel will not be appearing again today, Ricciardo gets it all wrong at Lew Combes. Running over the unforgiving kerbs the Australian takes a real pounding.

The camera picks up on Gutierrez who is stationary and facing the wrong way aftyer a spin in Blanchimont. Asked if he can get back to the garage he replies that there is a problem with his gearbox - the cause of the off. "I turned in, and that was it," moans the hapless Mexican. The session is red flagged as the Sauber is recovered.

This comes just as countryman Perez had left the pits on option tyres, the first driver to make the switch.

The session resumes (again) and Magnussen and Lotterer are quick out of the box. Both are on the option rubber.

Magnussen, currently seventh on 52.677, goes quickest with a 51.074. Moment later teammate Button, also on the options, posts 50.659.

As Raikkonen is told he has a misfire and will need to pit for new parts, for a second it sounded as though the mechanic said "we have a mince pie, you'll need to pit...".

A 50.725 sees Kvyat split the McLaren duo, while Hulkenberg goes fourth ahead of Hamilton and Sutil.

Bottas goes second with a 50.677 as Grosjean complains that his rears are "all over the place".

Despite a mistake coming out of Malmedy, Rosberg goes quickest with a 49.793. Moments later, with no such mistakes, Hamilton posts 49.189 having gone quickest in S2 and S3.

Giving 100%, as ever, Alonso bangs in a 49.930 to go third, former teammate Massa going fourth (50.327) moments later.

A hairy moment for Ricciardo as he exits T9, the Australian having only completed 6 laps thus far. Nonetheless, the Red Bull driver improves to eighth (50.977).

With thirty minute remaining, drivers now look ahead to Sunday and begin focussing on longer runs.

Bianchi is currently 15th, ahead of Raikkonen.

Having performed a practice start, Hamilton reports that it was "far too aggressive on the initial phase, better in the second".

On the longer runs, and having completed almost the same amount of laps, Hamilton is around 0.6s quicker than his teammate.

"The rear is so poor, so poor," complains Raikkonen as he heads into the pits to change to the softer rubber. The team advises that teammate Alonso has opted for more wing and asks the Finn if he wants to follow suit.

Rosberg is advised that his tyre temperatures are dropping and that consequently he may suffer a lack of grip when in traffic.

The session ends with Hamilton quickest ahead of Rosberg, Alonso, Massa, Button, Bottas, Kvyat, Ricciardo, Magnussen and Hulkenberg.

Vergne is eleventh, ahead of Sutil, Perez, Grosjean, Raikkonen, Bianchi, Gutierrez, Chilton, Ericsson and Lotterer. Maldonado and Vettel both having failed to post a time.
