Qualifying is less important now says Sutil

Sauber is playing catch up according to Adrian Sutil who feels his team is not at the level it should be after the first day's running in Melbourne.

"We're not as fast as we wanted but at least we're out there, we're driving, we're improving," said the 31-year-old.

"We have quite a step to catch up still but nevertheless I was quite happy with the session in the afternoon," he added. "We lost quite a lot of time in the morning but at least we did our programme."

The German went on to suggest he may look to sacrifice grid position during tomorrow's qualifying if it leaves him with a stronger race package.

"You can lose or gain many positions by having different engine power when you are fuel saving or if you just have a better balance, so I think the focus is much more on the race than last year," he explained.

"Of course you always want to start as far up front as possible so we'll try our best but I think the focus is mainly on the race. I don't think qualifying is so important anymore."
