Brake problems hamper Toro Rosso

Inconsistent brakes are hampering Toro Rosso according to its drivers, who each spent time off the circuit during today's opening practice sessions. Both Jean-Eric Vergne and Daniil Kvyat complained of problems which saw them locking either the front or rear wheels, seemingly at random, sending both in to the scenery on numerous occasions.

"Sometimes you've got this massive recharging on the rear; sometimes it's recharging too much, so you've got rear locking," Vergne explained. "Sometimes it doesn't want to recharge and the brake goes full on and you have no brakes on the rear, only the front, and you just go straight on into the gravel."

"I'm not feeling too confident on this part of the driving to be honest," agreed teammate Daniil Kvyat. "On this track the last problem you want to have is with the brakes and today I had had some of them, which was hurting me a bit.

"Being new, for my confidence, it's not really good," the Russian admitted. "I had to really be careful sometimes and go under my limit in some corners because I didn't know what to expect.

"I learned sometimes, from smaller series, that especially when it's half city track it's better not to crash in your first free practices because it hurts your confidence quite a lot. It's important to me, in my mind, to do as many laps as possible."

Reassuringly for Kvyat it appears that Renault has solved at least some of the problems which had blighted its pre-season performance; Vergne managed 65 laps across the day and Kvyat 63. "60% of our winter testing, more or less, was done today," Kvyat proclaimed. "It's a good sign."

But while things have improved the engine is still a long way from where it should be. One of the strengths of the Mercedes power unit is its drivability, an area Vergne concedes the Renault is lacking. "It is not great," he shrugged. "It is getting better but I think that's once we've got the reliability fixed this is what we need to work on; braking, acceleration, everything."

"There is more to come still," Kvyat affirmed. "First it's important to finish the race. To be honest this has been an important step. Now the second part starts."
