Jean-Eric Vergne has been penalised following a last lap clash with Esteban Gutierrez during today's United States Grand prix.

The Frenchman was actually handed a drive-through for causing the collision with the Sauber in Turn 13 of the last lap, an incident as defined by Article 16.1 of the FIA Formula One Sporting Regulations. However, since the race was over, 20 seconds was added to his elapsed race time thereby dropping him from 12th to 16th.

"I tried to pass my team-mate at Turn 1, and it didn't work and we ran wide," said Vergne after the race, "but I think he had used a bit of KERS on the straight so I couldn't pass him. I used all my KERS on the next straight to try and out-brake him but then Gutierrez clipped my rear wheel at Turn 12 and he tried to pass me and we touched."
