Jenson Button has been handed a three place grid penalty for Sunday's United States Grand Prix.

The Englishman was adjudged to have overtaken another driver (Daniil Kvyat) during this morning's opening session whilst red flags were being waved to stop the session due to the medical helicopter not being on site.

The stewards, headed by 1992 world champion Nigel Mansell, ruled that Button had breached Appendix H, Article 2.4.4.1 (b)(3) of the FIA International Sporting Code and therefore handed him the three-place penalty.

In the session, cut short by the errant helicopter and fog, which had already caused the start to be delayed by forty minutes, Button was second quickest behind Fernando Alonso.
