Michael Schumacher has been handed a ten place grid penalty for the Japanese Grand Prix following his race ending accident in Singapore today.

Schumacher collided with Jean-Eric Vergne, stewards stating that "the driver admitted the collision was his error due to the failure to anticipate the braking performance of the car with lower tyre grip following a safety car period”.

The stewards duly punished the Mercedes driver, stating it; "takes into account that this is the second similar offence by the driver this season."

Suggestions had initially circulated that the German suffered from brake failure, a problem he'd been nursing all weekend, however the stewards ruling dismisses such speculation.

The ten place penalty is the latest in a line of harsh(er) penalties for driving mistakes, triggered by Romain Grosjean's race ban following the Belgian Grand Prix.
