Caterham may have won the award for most unusual penalty of the season; a Darwinian exercise in Formula One if ever there was one.

A note from the stewards released after today's first practice session confirmed that the team had been fined 2,500 euros, however more interesting was why it was fined.

It is standard practice that the teams present their tyres to the FIA during scrutineering. This ensures a record is kept so the governing body can police a number of things, including allocated tyres being used in line with the regulations.

In Caterham's case one was missed. It was then fitted to Vitaly Petrov's car in opening practice as the Russian was sent out on track.

As a result the team has been found guilty of using "an incorrect tyre" and fined 2,500 euros.

We'll stay away from the three wheels on Caterham's wagon jokes…
